Wine & Terroir
We tried them and recommend them

Viúva Gomes Winery
Founded in 1808 and based in Almoçageme, Viúva Gomes is one of the last historic wineries of the Colares region.
Today, it is led by José and Diogo Baeta, 4th and 5th generation guardians of a rare Atlantic wine heritage.
Working on a small scale and in close collaboration with local growers, Viúva Gomes is dedicated to preserving
the identity of Colares through respectful, precise, and low-intervention winemaking.
Colares Terroir
Colares lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra de Sintra, shaped by strong maritime winds, high humidity, morning mists, and mild temperatures.
Its most emblematic vineyards grow in sandy soils, where vines are planted pé-franco (ungrafted), a unique practice that protected them
from the devastation of phylloxera in the late 19th Century and still defines the region today.
This rare combination of climate, geology, and traditional vineyard practices gives Colares wines their unmistakable freshness, minerality, and longevity.
The Wines
Viúva Gomes produces wines that favour place over style, working with indigenous varieties such as Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares.
From classic DOC Colares wines to small, site-specific and experimental cuvées, each wine is a sincere expression of land, time, and Atlantic influence.

Quinta de San Michel
Set in the historic Colares wine region, between the Sintra mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Quinta de San Michel is a family estate
dedicated to the creation of authentic, terroir-driven wines.
Rooted in sandy soils shaped by ocean winds and mountain mists, the vineyards express a rare balance of freshness, minerality, and Atlantic character. Indigenous grape varieties and traditional practices are respected and preserved, while thoughtful modern techniques are applied
to protect the vineyard naturally and sustainably.
Each wine from Quinta de San Michel reflects a deep connection to place, a dialogue between land, climate, and time, o
ffering an honest expression of the Janas terroir and the living heritage of Colares.
Visitors are invited to discover the estate through a selection of curated wine experiences, each offering a different perspective on the wines,
the landscape, and the spirit of the Quinta.
